Recipe Love_Sichuan Pepper Chicken Stir Fry

Today's my wedding anniversary so to celebrate we've been out to Long Bay beach, where Dan proposed to me, for a swim. Precious moments. There's a bottle of champagne in the fridge we'll crack into at sometime soon but before that we've tucked into a hearty stir fry dinner. So delicious - we enjoyed this meal so much and I'm sure you will too.

Serves 4

3 tsp Sichuan peppercorns (I didn't find any so used normal black ones)
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tsp grated fresh ginger
3 tsp cornflour
500g boneless skinles chicken thighs or breasts, cut into strips
100g dried thin egg noodles
oil, for cooking
1 onion, sliced
1 yellow capsicum, cut into strips
1 red capsicum, cut into strips
100g sugar snap peas
1/4 cup chicken stock

Heat wok (a large frypan is fine) over high heat, dry-fry the peppercorns for 30 seconds Remove them from the wok and crush with a mortar and pestle.

Combine the soy sauce, garlic, ginger, cornflour and ground pepper in a large non-metallic bowl. Add the chicken and toss to coat in the marinade. Cover and marinate in the fridge for 2 hours.

Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil, add the egg noodles and cook for 3 minutes, or until tender. Drain. Toss through a little oil to prevent them from sticking together.

Heat the wok over high heat, add 1 tbsp of the oil and swirl it around to coat the side. Stir-fry the chicken in batches over medium high heat for 5 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked, adding more oil when necessary. Remove from the wok.

Reheat the wok, add 1 tbsp of oil and stir-fry the onion, capsicum and sugar snap peas over high heat for about 3 mins, or until the vegetables are tender. Add the chicken stock and bring to the boil.

Return the chicken and egg noodles to the wok and toss over high heat until well combined. Serve immediately.

Recipe Love_Donna Hay's Pea and Zucchini Risotto

It's been a sad, awful week in New Zealand since a second huge quake rocked Christchuch. I've been glued to the news and every photographic or footage udpate. Amidst such tragedy not much seems like it's worthy of posting at the moment. In such a tiny country and with such a small population it seems like everyone knows someone that has been tragically affected. I've prayed and cried for the lost even though they are not known to me personally. It's good to be reminded of what is really important.

One thing that warmed my belly this week was this delicious risotto. Try it out and let me know if you love it too!

Serves 4

6 cups chicken or vegetable stock
1/2 cup white wine
40g butter
2 leeks, trimmed and sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 cups arborio rice
2 tsp olive oil
3 zucchini sliced
1.5 cups frozen peas
65g baby spinach leaves
1/4 cup chopped flat leaf parsley leaves
sea salt and cracked black pepper
shaved parmesan cheese, to serve
lemon wedges, to serve

Place the stock and wine in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cover and bring to a slow simmer. Melt the butter in a separate large saucepan over medium heat. Add the leeks and cook for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the garlic and rice and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until the rice is translucent. Pour in the hot stock, 1 cup at a time, stirring constantly, until each cup of stock is absorbed and the rice is just al dente (around 25 minutes). I had to add more water to get to this point. Heat the oil in a medium non-stick frying pan over high heat. Add the zucchini to the risotto, along with the peas, spinach, parsley, salt and pepper. Cook for 4 minutes or until the spinach is wilted and the peas are heated through. To serve, top with the parmesan and add lemon wedges.

Alice and her husband Joshua Yoon are the brains behind 'Little Dot' stationery. They term it 'fashionery'. Little is coined after the adorable, quirky character she created back in 2006.

Urban Nanna: What do you do for a crust? What positive impact has your profession made on you?
I draw what's in my mind and I design what I love - for Little Dot :D This has made me keep my feet on the ground.

Urban Nanna: Any creative or Urban Nanna-ish mediums you are involved in for leisure?
I loooove baking, but have found it hard to get the time to bake these days. I also love to walk in the parks. Just looking really... looking at trees mainly, I always marvel at the numerous shades of green they have, and they look new and different each time I look at them; they fascinate me.

Urban Nanna: What do you enjoy most about the work you are involved with?
When I work, I get to inhabit the child side of me. I like that space because there's no impossibilities or worries. This is all I know and this is what I love. It's work, but also leisure, this is who I am, it's impossible to seperate work and life. I guess wholesomeness is the word I'm looking for.

Urban Nanna: Which sites online do you visit regularly as a source of creative inspiration / information?
I like Frankie :) for obvious reasons heh heh... I also like Amazon, I love searching through different books, finding interesting reading material. I like to watch clips on Canadian illustration and film archive nfb.ca - it's loads of fun!

Urban Nanna: Which artists and creative people do you admire?

I like Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts. I guess its the innocence of his characters that trapped me at first glance.

Also C.S. Lewis and Maya Angelou.

That's Intriguing : Rene Gruau - Fashion Illustration Legend

We're not far away from our trip to European shores but I've just spotted the kind of exhibition that makes me swoon (and maybe salivate a little!). It's just finished so we won't be able to get to it sadly. Somerset House in London hosted "René Grau and the line of beauty". Through original works on paper it described the genius which was Rene Gruau (1909 - 2004). Grau collaborated frequently with his longtime friend Christian Dior. Together they created and described the elegance, beauty and drama of haute couture fashion. Grau's work can be found in the Louvre and is credited with influencing the direction of the fashion industry and a generation of fashion illustrators which succeeded him. Aside from his work with Dior he also illustrated for Givenchy, Balenciaga, Lanvin and Shiaparelli.

Personally I have realised my own love for fashion illustration arises out of my passion for branding. Describing a garment (truly an artwork in itself) with colour, line, paper and ink reflects the challenge a graphic designer has when crafting an identity which will represent the core of an organisation. With a few lines Grau captured the elite style of the world's top fashion houses and invited desire for their wares - the type of influence any designer would hope to be known for.

Urban Nanna: What do you do for a crust? What positive impact has your profession made on you?

R: I'm studying Pop Music at Auckland University and as you know, have just opened my first store! It's the dream job. The most positive impact would be the response from people our age who have been inspired to do things they have also dreamt of doing.

S: I'm a freelance designer and co-owner of The Bread and Butter Vintage and Handmade store. I must say meeting so many people like-minded people builds up your confidence and feeds your creativity, a job where you get to sell things you love and meet amazing people really has no downfall.

Urban Nanna: Any creative or Urban Nanna-ish mediums you are involved in for leisure?

R: I love to sew and quilt but never seem to have enough time to do all that I would like to! I also write music, make home-made cards and bake!

S: Much like Rose i love to sew and bake as well as cross stitching, but really i enjoy any medium which involves material.

Urban Nanna: What do you enjoy most about the work you are involved with?

R: Thrifting. Anyone who is a thrifter will understand the adrenaline rush when you find that one-of-a-kind magic item. Just yesterday I found a 60s swimsuit and I was pumped for the rest of the day.

S: At the moment I love being able to roll out of bed, walk down the stairs, and then straight into my own dream come true shop full of goodies. Plus, trying on pretty dresses while on a ‘lunch break’.

Urban Nanna: Which sites online do you visit regularly as a source of creative
inspiration / information?

R: There are many blogs that I check religously, but my favourites are Wish wish wish, She's got a passion for fashion and NZ blogger A little brighter vintage

to name a few. I like seeing the clothes they thrift and make. They're also all such beautiful, friendly ladies, so I like to fall over their photos and dream about far off places, romances and great op-shops.

S:THIS IS GOING TO BE HARD! Umm...
- Sharon Margaret: My best friend and the best nana knitter I have ever met. She makes knitting dreams come true.
- Willow Ships: Her photos make me want to romanticise my life and wear wonderous clothes everyday.
- Fancy – NZ design blog. They bring me all the fantastic things that are happening in our small little country and I don’t even have to leave my bedroom. Before I found this site I had no idea just how creative NZ really was.
- So much to tell you. What can say, this site is just.. I just L-O-V-E it.

Urban Nanna: Which artists and creative people do you admire?

R: Hmm.. Hard question that. I love the designs from UK label Nadinoo. The pieces are vintage inspired but have originality and fun with their prints. And I'm also inspired by musicians such as Artisan Guns (NZ), Sufjan Stevens, Beach House and Bjork.

S: Oh wow, I thought the last question was hard...
I must say that above anything my friends and family inspire me, they are in all honesty the most creative people I know. They sing, dance, play musical instruments, design, build, create, capture life and love on film. They manage to portray life in everything they do. It blows me away! They want me to achieve more.

As a side note thought, I think the first person who ever swept me off my feet with creativity was Carlos Scarpa. I am a huge fan, his eye for architecture and transforming the land is simply amazing. I’m a huge fan of concrete, and boy does he know how to use it to its full potential.

I am a painter. I've managed a studio and community art space in Auckland, and am currently living in the UK, hoping to do the same. My profession has introduced me to a lot of amazing people and challenged me to be more generous with my time and resources.

Swimming and pottery (well really just playing with clay).

Recipe Love_Jamie Oliver's Beef Tagine

I'm not much for celebrity fan worship but there's definitely a few I'd love to meet. Jamie Oliver – for sure. Not only a fabulous chef, he's used his name and fame to champion his own "food revolution". All without dropping the laid back style, dress and accent that makes me think he'd still be a great guy to meet for a pint "down pub".

We ate his beef tagine last night with our guests but didn't read the recipe properly and didn't allow enough time. It can definitely be done in 1.5 hours rather than 3 using two pots – one for the squash (we used pumpkin) and prunes, the other for the rest. If you've got a spare few hours to marinate and stew to perfection let me know if it was worth it. Enjoy!

• 600g stewing beef
• olive oil
• 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
• a small bunch of fresh coriander
• 1 x 400g tin of chickpeas, drained

• 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes
• 800ml vegetable stock, preferably organic
• 1 small squash (approximately 800g), deseeded and cut into 5cm chunks

• 100g prunes, stoned and roughly torn
• 2 tablespoons flaked almonds, toasted

For the spice rub
• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1 level tablespoon ras el hanout spice mix*
• 1 level tablespoon ground cumin
• 1 level tablespoon ground cinnamon

• 1 level tablespoon ground ginger
• 1 level tablespoon sweet paprika

Mix all the spice rub ingredients together in a small bowl. Put the beef into a large bowl, massage it with the spice rub, then cover with clingfilm and put into the fridge for a couple of hours – ideally overnight. That way the spices really penetrate and flavour the meat.

When you’re ready to cook, heat a generous lug of olive oil in a tagine or casserole– type pan and fry the meat over a medium heat for 5 minutes. Add your chopped onion and coriander stalks and fry for another 5 minutes. Tip in the chickpeas and tomatoes, then pour in 400ml of stock and stir. Bring to the boil, then put the lid on the pan or cover with foil and reduce to a simmer for 1½hours.

At this point add your squash, the prunes and the rest of the stock. Give everything a gentle stir, then pop the lid back on the pan and continue cooking for another 1½hours. Keep an eye on it and add a splash of water if it looks too dry.

Once the time is up, take the lid off and check the consistency. If it seems a bit too runny, simmer for 5 to 10 minutes more with the lid off. The beef should be really tender and flaking apart now, so have a taste and season with a pinch or two of salt. Scatter the coriander leaves over the tagine along with the toasted almonds, then take it straight to the table with a big bowl of lightly seasoned couscous and dive in.

*Ras el hanout (Arabic for 'top of the shop') is a blend of the best spices a vendor has in his shop. The mixture varies depending on who is selling it, but can be a combination of anywhere from 10 to 100 spices. It usually includes nutmeg, cinnamon, mace, aniseed, turmeric, cayenne, peppercorns, dried galangal, ginger, cloves, cardamom, chilli, allspice and orris root.

1. What do you do for a crust? What positive impact has your profession made on you?

PS. I LOVE YOU EVENTS is my sanctuary for all things beautiful and creative. Formed to style and coordinate weddings after seeing a distinct lack in the marketplace, PS. I LOVE YOU EVENTS caters to all events big or small and allows my imagination to run wild, especially when given free reign over an event or a very loose brief. As director of the company, I meet, talk, laugh and cry with the most amazing people who are at the happiest points in their lives. The fact they wish me and my company PS. I LOVE YOU EVENTS to be a part of that is both inspiring in itself and naturally very flattering.

2. Any other creative mediums you are involved in for leisure?

Prior to launching PS. I LOVE YOU EVENTS I was the manager and head fashion booker for NOVA models. On a daily basis I was working with talented, creative and extremely clever people. My day generally consisted of meeting with ridiculously beautiful people, creating the perfect vision with photographers for shoots, working with hair and makeup artists and amazing stylists, and teaching young models to strut the catwalk!

Fashion Week, naturally the highlight of the fashion calendars year – a crazy mad time, bringing in delicious international models from Milan, Paris and New York to be swooned over by an array of talented NZ and international designers.

Since leaving NOVA, I remain an international and NZ roaming scout, often finding completely gorgeous treasures along my travels which are snaffled up and in no time plastered thorough our local and international fashion magazines.

3. What do you enjoy most about the work you are involved with making?

The art of celebration. Celebrations are a part of our lives from a very early age and many of these rituals have existed since the inception of mankind. I love taking these rituals and putting a creative, individual spin on each.

Events require an amazing amount of organisation, planning and coordinating however all of this should always remain behind the scenes so that the focus remains on the beautiful environment and the enjoyment of the celebration. Nothing is better than an event your client completely loves and one their friends envy. Clearly, the most successful events are driven by a passion for people and a passion to create an amazing environment that reflects who they are.

4. Which sites online do you visit regularly as a source of creative inspiration / information?

I use travel as a huge source of inspiration. Having returned from 5 weeks throughout Europe with my husband, I came back with a fresh palette of ideas, colours and styles. Travel is indeed, the best visual tool as a source of inspiration. Completely in love with Paris and anything French vintage not to mention the small villages in Italy – the colours, smells, people, markets... I am slowly collecting stunning pieces which will adorn both my house and special events I organise.

I prefer to create my own inspiration than using sites to stimulate the thought process, however when I am to visit an online site they vary from high fashion websites to local NZ artists.

The Poi Room is a recent favourite for our talented NZ artists, located in Newmarket they are nice and handy to pop in and visit on a regular basis and see what gorgeous colours, shapes and textures our talented pool of NZ creative have come up with.

Alternatively, I love reading beautiful blogs. A favourite is Garancedore. All her photographs and posts are very stylised and elegant.

Surprisingly, I am not essentially drawn to wedding sites – I prefer to take inspiration from past and current fashions, colours, people, scents and of course wonderful travel opportunities to open my eyes to the new, different and beautiful.

5. Which artists and creative people (in the broadest sense - dancers, photographers, poets, designers, directors) do you admire?

Mademoiselle Coco Chanel – I based the PS. I LOVE YOU EVENTS logo on the same font as the CHANEL logo uses. Beauty and style effortlessly dictated at all times. Awe inspiring class and sophistication intertwined with a chic fashion forward approach.

Helmut Newton – My favourite photographer. I can’t seem to get enough of his crisp black and white images, testing the boundaries, fashion forward, raw beauty... I get goose bumps every time I view his work.

My family and friends – Constantly inspiring and beautiful. I take inspiration from the colours they wear, the words they use, the cards they write me, the simplest of things. Inspiration is not hard to find if you know where to look and what to look for.

That's Intriguing : David Downton - Fashion Illustrator

There's hope for those who "work for the man", shelving their true passions or talents. David Downton says he spent 12 post-university years "wagging my tail when the phone rang". After drawing experience from whoever paid the bills, Downton shifted to fashion and portraiture illustration. He admits "I used to boast that I had worked with some of the world’s most beautiful women. Now I’m saying I’ve worked with them all".

Indeed the phone keeps ringing – the list of celebrities he's drawn and clients he works for now are unmatched in illustration. Here's hope for the rest of us – dreams really do come true.

Recipe love_Pilaf of Spinach, Dill and Marinated Grilled Chicken Breast

I love a good risotto! This is divine with a mild lemon tang and incredible mix of flavours. It's is from a cookbook which we've devoured - Black Dog Cottage Cookbook by Adie McClelland. Wholesome and kiwi, you can't go wrong.

6 skinless boneless chicken breasts beaten lightly between gladwrap

2 small garlic cloves, crushed

120ml olive oil

1tsp oregano leaves, chopped

1 tsp thyme leaves, chopped

1/2 tsp grated lemon zest

salt and freshly ground black pepper

300g onions, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed

125ml extra virgin olive oil

225g arborio rice

1/2 tsp dry roasted cumin seeds, ground

2 cups light chicken stock

1kg spinach, washed, dried and shredded

1/2 small bunch of fresh dill, finely chopped

1/2 small bunch of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

grated rind and juice of 1 lemon

serves 6

Marinate chicken breast for 4 hours or overnight in garlic, oil, herbs, lemon, salt and pepper.

Saute onion and garlic in oil until translucent.

Add rice and cumin, and stir for 2 minutes.

Pour in stock, add salt and pepper. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Stir in spinach, dill, parsley, lemon rind and juice. Add a little water if mixture looks dry. The pilaf should be moist. Replace lid and cook for another 10 minutes. Keep covered and set aside while grilling the chicken.

Wipe off the marinade from chicken and grill until cooked. This will probably only take about 12-15 minutes. Keep warm giving the meat time to relax before slicing the breasts and placing on top of pilaf.

This is our Sunday can't-be-bothered meal which is really easy, quick and super tasty. We usually have all these things in our fridge and pantry anyway which makes it even sweeter. This recipe is thanks to a Countdown-sponsored Annabel White throwaway rag.

1/2 c pitted black olives

1T capers

3 small dried chilli (or 1-2 small fresh chillies, chopped)

a whole lot of garlic

1/2t oregano

2 cans tomatoes in juice, chopped

5T olive oil

400g spaghetti

Serves 4

Sautee the garlic in oil. Add all the other ingredients and simmer for about 20 minutes until thick and the oil is starting to separate from the tomato. Toss with hot spaghetti and add some grated parmesan.

Food in a minute is a great site - if you don't mind the odd product placement. I have hunted through it on occasion for simple but hearty fare like this. I like to make my own mustard sauce from another recipe here rather than use this dressing.

400g pasta bows or penne

1 whole smoked chicken

3 spring onions, trimmed and sliced

150g grapes, cut in halves (I prefer the green harder style grapes)

3-4 sticks celery, sliced finely

1-2 tbsp chopped fresh fennel, dill or basil

grated rind 1 lemon

1 cup honey & mustard dressing

Serves 3-5

Cook pasta and drain well, rinse thoroughly in cold water.

Pull the chicken into bite sized pieces, removing the skin.

Toss the pasta with the chicken and all other ingredients.

It's not hard to figure out from the last two entries that we love slow food. It nourishes the soul after a hard day and this recipe is no exception. Again great for the dinner party menu or just a quick-ish whipped up dinner for the troops.

450 grams chicken thighs

1 tbsp olive oil

salt and pepper

1 large zucchini, cut into cubes

1 can chickpeas

1 can diced tomatoes

1 cup chicken stock

1/2 tsp paprika

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp ground cinnamon

fresh coriander, chopped

Serves 4

Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium high heat.

Season the chicken with salt and pepper and cook for three minutes on each side, until brown.

Add the zucchini and continue cooking.

When the zucchini has browned, add the chickpeas, tomatoes, chicken stock and spices.

Turn the heat to low and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, until the chicken is tender and cooked through. Serve and garnish with chopped coriander.

Recipe love_Slow Cooked Lamb Shanks with Oregano and Tomatoes

Great meal - hearty and wonderful for a dinner party. We've served it a bunch of times and always a winner!

This can be done in slow cooker or oven. I have reformatted it so it reads for a slow cooker. On oven it is 3 hours at 180 degrees. I have cooked it both ways though.

4 lamb shanks (or 2kg of lamb - we have cooked it with other cuts)

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 tbsp dried oregano

1 onion, chopped

1 carrot, sliced

1 stick celery, sliced

200ml white wine

375ml beef stock

1 box cherry tomatoes

1 can chopped tomatoes

1 cup kalamata olives (just olives with no pips - black ones)

salt and freshly ground black pepper

Serves 4

Put all ingredients into the slow cooker and mix everything well. Turn it on to 'low' for 8-10 hours. When you are ready, turn the slow cooker off and take out the lamb. Remove all the lamb from the bone and place it in a bowl. Discard the fat and bones. Strain the slow cooker through a sieve into a bowl and discard the celery, carrot etc. Cook the lamb in the strained liquid and boil gently for 5 min. The liquid will reduce by 1/3. Add the tomatoes and olives, boil gently for another 5 mins - but don't let the skin come off the cherry tomatoes. Serve with steamed rice and an optional green salad (although it's great without one!).

This recipe is really really yummy considering the ugly, dated cookbook it's from. It can be made with a slow cooker or in the oven using a covered dish. I would guess you could half the cooking time in an oven to about 3-4 hours on 180 degrees.

Part 1

1/2 cup flour

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

1/4 tsp chilli powder

25g butter

4-6 chicken thighs, skin on (I use frozen ones)

1 large onion (finely chopped)

2 apples (peeled and cut into 1/8ths)

1 1/4 cup chicken stock

2 cups pineapple juice

2 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp cornflour

25g butter

Part 2

2 bananas

1/2 cup flaked almonds

1/4 cup sultanas

Serves 4-6 (depending on chicken thighs)

Mix flour, salt, pepper and chilli powder on a plate. Roll chicken pieces in flour mixture, shake off excess. Set aside. Melt first measure of butter in a frypan. Add chicken pieces and lightly brown all over for about 6 - 8 mins. Add to slow cooker. Add all ingredients from 'part 1' into slow cooker. Leave for 6-8 hours on 'low'.

Peel bananas and cut in half lengthways. Heat a frypan and add the bananas until lightly browned all over. Add sultanas and flaked almonds to frypan and stir frequently until lightly browned. Remove from heat and add to casserole with bananas. Skim fat from surface. Serve by itself (we do!) or with salad.

I'm a design geek. It's not just a job although God knows it would be easier if it was. Design is a hobby and a passion. What I love most is working with great brands. A successful brand story means something. I love helping people to work out what their story is and to deliver compelling communication which draws from it.

I've been privileged to create and be part of the design story of hundreds of companies. Lately I've noticed some new brand identities which strike me in their similarity. The brands exist in different markets and sometimes different cities but that doesn't always matter - right? Auckland City Council got a rap over it's legal knuckles for the similarity to Triangle Television thanks to my lovely godfather at AJ Park. It's worth knowing what your customers have seen before you send your branding out into the world. 

Would you want to commit your money to an insurer which resembles your local supermarket Countdown? Uberagency FutureBrand might have known better with client ANZ's recently launched replacement brand to ING - OnePath. I'm unsure about who is behind the new Sanitarium redesign but I can't get past the similarity to an identity from interiors retailer Allium - in name and design. Or the overWHELMING likeness in name, colour and design between the Wellington City Airport and Wild Appetite brands.

A great brand story means saying something different from everyone else. In a crowded visual environment be careful who you copy. Or unwittingly follow. If you hire a designer to create something which represents the heart of your business, make sure they've looked through the visual landscape that your customers have seen. 

Viva_Embrace Your Inner Nana

When a trend hits the shops and newspapers is it time to quit? The thought does cross my mind but honestly it's not just a trend for me - Nanna is something I deeply believe in. It seems I'm not alone - this week in NZ Herald's Viva magazine a few others share their views on their part in the new wave of Nanna.

Viva's article excited me - women of all generations are reminded that, in these tight times, yesteryear is hot right now. It's green - encouraging recycling, reuse and mending of the imperfect. It's social - encouraging craft and other pursuits which enables face to face time in pursuit of a functional end.

One snippet that caught my eye was an observation by writer Wendyl Nissen, as it reflects my own story. "My mother spends her whole time shaking her head at what I'm doing," says Nissen. "She was a modern miss at the forefront of feminism and I'm picking up on stuff she actively discouraged". I've been on both sides - well not a card carrying protesting feminist but something like that. I get it - I used to feel slight repulsion about haberdashery and things that look like wasted time and money. I'm not sure what turned me around apart from my faith and the softening with age. I also better understand the power and complementary facet of femininity versus the doomed attempt to mirror the way men do things in the corporate world.

Nissen agrees that the trend will endure beyond the celebrity endorsements and at-the-moment retail offerings. I wouldn't have minded a slightly earlier onslaught of Nanna the shops in some respects. Lace gloves and some of the things I used in our wedding were nowhere to be found 6 months ago and now there are plenty of options!

I've got a long list of things I like about Brooke Fraser's new video. The lady herself and her voice aside, this list is to do with her clothing and the set styling.

1. One gorgeous lace dress, WOW

2. Jane Austen's Coralie Bickford-Smith designed book cover (see my post about her work here)

3. Whites photograph: these guys are the Warren and Mahoney of New Zealand photography in terms of how prolific and iconic they are to how we see our country.

4. Crown Lynn pottery - increasingly rare and popular, I've seen that even Shortland Street's restaurant has a wall of different examples now

5. The incredible, innocent, beautifully executed illustration

6. Vintage-condition Sebel chairs - iconic clean design which helped make stylish plastic furniture affordable

All of the above reminds me that the Urban Nanna concept is trendy, enduring, and not just for the vintage-shop-hunting few any more. It's commercial, more expensive than it used to be but it can be difficult to master the look, as this video has. 10/10 to the production and styling team who created a delightful video that is both excellently crafted and visually sweet.

World Press Association Exhibition Auckland + Margaret Moth

I'm grateful to live here - New Zealand is so isolated, so stable. A recent visit to the World Press Association exhibition reminded me in a confronting way that while kiwis and in fact everyone I know, live in peace, with food in their bellies, so many people struggle just to get through each day.

I enjoyed the exhibition's change in pace - a chance to view such incredible material frame by frame rather than numbing footage on the news. These images and the people depictred are given more reverence with the slower, more engaging audience experience of the exhibition format.

I was inspired by a featured photographer called Margaret Moth, a New Zealand photo journalist who had this year lost her life to cancer. Her story was illustrated in a fifteen minute clip in which this feisty, beautiful, intimidating figure discussed the gunfire attack which claimed half of her face while on location. I thought she was fantastic and heroic. A rock-n-roll soldier of photography who always wore black. Our first female TV photographer who graduated from TVNZ to employment by CNN. She covered the Persian Gulf War, riots following Indiria Gandhi's assassination, civil war in Tbilisi, Georgia, and the Bosnian War. From her Gisborne childhood she developed a love of jumping out of Gypsy Moth planes (hence her surname) and photography.

The compelling, revealing imagery from the world's finest international photo journalists was unlike other exhibitions I've seen in New Zealand. Sponsored by Rotary, it incorporates the winning entries from the World Press Photo Contest. Check it out - Smith and Caugheys, Level 6, finishes 5 September.

Wet-season rains in the region had failed completely for three years running. Many natural water sources had dried up and even the more resilient animals such as elephants and giraffes were dying, alongside those more susceptible to water-shortage. The drought also caused immense suffering among nomadic pastoralists in the area, as their herds were decimated.

Design lessons: 100 primary school students

Away from the corporate world for a few precious hours, I had the chance to share some of my passion for design and some basic principles to 100 year 3 and 4 students. It would be lying to say it wasn't challenging! How to reduce so many theories and ideas into 45 minutes for such young minds? But after two classes of 50 students I realised I'd loved every minute.

A friend mentioned that her primary school students were learning about communication. I was curious: what would that mean for year 3 students? She offered me the chance to teach them some of the things I've learned about design and I agreed - with a little trepidation. We agreed I would emphasise colour theory and illustrate the connection between what is seen and what is thought.

Being in a primary school after 20 years was a strange experience. The same colourful artworks meandered around bright walls, dripping with crayon and crepe paper. The same lovely motherly teacher types twittered in the staffroom. The students were lined up miltary-style and walked to the hall for the lesson.

Colour connotations

I asked the students about what they already knew of design via parents - most mentioned fashion or industrial designers. My field is still a lesser known entity I gather. So we moved on to other questions - why is a stop sign red? Why does red mean stop? What did they think of a pink or green stop sign? Strange, wierd and funny they said. True. Pink is Barbie, marshmallows. Green is recycling, environment, GO. Lesson one seemed to stick.

Colour, type and branding

Colours mean things - that was clear. So I introduced another variable - type. I discussed a logotype famous to children (Burger King), mentioning some standout features. I waged that as well as the function of the words and the stylised burger, Burger King offers us the chance to get an impression of the experience available by visiting.

No doubt the material was challenging but I hoped I pitched it right. I asked what the colours and type looked like for each industry slide. Technology, industrial/construction and cleaning products slides were presented. I was impressed - the older class successfully guessed many of the colours technology describes itself by. Hearing answers from other students, they eventually understood what I was getting at.

All up, my short teaching experience was both immensely humbling and satisfying. I am pleased to have been invited back and look forward to updating my blog before the end of the year with Teaching: Episode Two.

Urban Nanna Interview 10 _ Renee Jaine

1. Which interests and personal qualities do you identify as being "Urban Nanna"?

I love pottering down to the beach for a walk, cooking, and talking to people in real life rather than via a computer! I'm probably a bit of a technophobe and I think the world might be a better place if life was a little bit slower. Maybe I have a tendency to idealise 'the good old days'.

2. What parts of the "Urban Nanna" interests do you enjoy most?

I like establishing deep connections with people - really engaging with them, not just passing time in their company. I guess that's why I'm not so keen on technology-mediated communication, but on face-to-face chats, over a cuppa or a coffee, or on the beach. Because I'm keen to establish those deeper connections, I really value people that are genuine, honest, and not too concerned about portraying themself as 'perfection personified!'. As a random point - I think that actual nanas (and poppas) have a lot to teach us in these areas - they take time with people, and they aren't 'image managers'!

3. Any favourite recipes?

Triple chocolate brownie from the Marie Claire cookbook (similar to these) are absolutely amazing.... just don't eat too much at once!

Anything by Donna Hay generally goes down well - she has tasty recipes that seem complex but are actually pretty simple.

4. Which sites online or shops do you visit regularly as a source of inspiration / information for these interests?

TED.com is an amazing website - it's a whole series of talks given by people who are all experts in their respective areas. There is so much to learn. I personally get excited reading/hearing about well-being and how societies can be improved.

5. Which artists and creative people do you admire?

I tend to admire people who think differently/creatively about 'society'.

Alain de Botton is probably my favourite - he wrote a book called 'Status Anxiety', which basically says that we should all stop comparing ourselves so much, and that maybe life isn't about getting 'to the top of the heap'. He's a philosopher for the modern age.

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a similar sort of book, called 'Outliers', in which he challenges the myth of the 'mogul/superstar' and asks 'how did this person become so successful - was it just their own doing, or did many external factors align?'. You can probably guess his conclusion.

There are heaps of other authors! But I also really admire anyone who has a passion or a talent and uses it for the benefit of others. Take Jamie Oliver. He's an awesome chef, and he's using his knowledge of cooking/nutrition/food-as-fuel to help change school lunches in the UK and the US. He's trying to stem the obesity epidemic, which is outside the usual cheffing realm. People like that are tops!

Architecture Love _ NZ Supreme Court

This is my new favourite New Zealand modern building. Standing inside, I felt so impressed and proud that fellow countrymen had given the nod to such daring design at this senior civic level. I expect to see such elegance in the international fashion and design capitals but sadly there isn't much that stands close to this architectural feat in Aotearoa.

A week after I'd discovered some shots of the new Warren & Mahoney designed supreme court in Wellington, we had a chance to check it out. It surprised me that while there had been fanfare around the opening (Prince William did the honours), I hadn't seen much coverage given to the outstanding design of the building itself. Without any security in sight and the fortune of arriving at the same time as a tour party, we had a heart-stopping half hour to look around. As usual, photographs don't do this place justice but take a look.

Reportedly the building cost 80 million $NZD. In my opinion every tax payer cent was worth it to witness the resulting brilliant architectural statement. For the public, there are in a sense three spaces to view which make up the building's form. Each incorporates increasingly delicate materials from the bronze outer ad copper middle to the wooden interior. It's an intelligent solution which points to ideas of security and protection befitting the building.

The outer layer is a rectangular twisted shell of 8m tall bronze shards. This is mirrored from below by an pristine pool of water. Inside the doors there is an outer hallway space which surrounds the inner dome. I found it a visual treat to see the large sheets of copper diamond-shaped casing moulded around the inner dome space. They seem to rise from the concrete and finish out of sight.

Most impressive of all, the interior domed space is formed from diamond shaped silver beech panels. Each wooden panel is pierced with holes which decrease in size towards the opening in the roof. The design is intended to provide a cocoon for the legal proceedings where acoustics are protected from echoes – a significant issue for older judiciary buildings.

No thought has been spared for any detail – my husband was pleased to find the chairs throughout the interior were Eames chairs (for court attendees) and ergonomic Herman Miller chairs (for the two secretarial staff). Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of the room is the two tall folding screens woven from copper and another darker metal. They reminded me somewhat of Maori black feather cloaks. Functioning to protect the entranceways of the judiciary on each side of the room, they also add to the warm yet prestigious tone of space. Finally, as a last detail to mark the importance of the place, occasion and those who preside, a small taonga (precious artefact) from both Maori and Pakeha heritage is cased in glass in the central hollow of the judges platform. Our guide told us that these are on loan and may be changed out periodically.

Of our weekend in Wellington, this was my favourite cultural experience without doubt. If you get a chance to visit, please do make the effort to check out some cutting-edge architecture and let me know what you think. Personally, it makes me very happy to be a New Zealander. I've heard some don't like it but I can't see why to be honest and in any case – a bit of controversy over design can't hurt!

Creating a personal connection_Alexa Johnston "Ladies a Plate"

New Zeland baking - can't beat it. I've attempted a few Kiwi treats lately: ginger slice, Anzac biscuits, banana cake! Quite a feat for me as I'm not a baker at heart.

I continue to stumble across "Ladies a Plate" in the bookshops and have fallen in love with the cover and book design. How awful is it using a cookbook which isn't well designed and has poor quality images of the creations? I suppose others are also charmed – the book was an instant bestseller.

As I find out more about author Alexa Johnson and read her story there are so many more things which I find delightful. Adding to the personal touches found in her books, her website says that books "will be signed by Alexa and can be inscribed to the person of your choice". Wow! Quite an offer I'd say for a person who has sold to so many.

The art historian background of the author serves to create a favourite baking treasury like none other. The amazing thing (along with the mouthwatering recipes) about her books are the stories, letters, tips and images of people who have contributed the cookbooks which make up the source material. This kind of approach is such a great contrast to the shelves of celebrity chefs who have promoted themselves above the rafts of others who have helped them get there. I find it so beautifully genuine, simple yet still entirely elegant. Get a copy!

Judging Penguin books by their covers _ Coralie Bickford Smith

I'd defy whoever created the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" to not be tempted by the Penguin cloth bound classics that have scored a resounding international "love" vote. Clearly these titles are bestsellers anyway but if it was just up to me to judge covers I'd say give the first prize for last year to Coralie Bickford Smith. The identity for Microsoft's search engine takes out the competition: worst identity of 2009

Leaning forward in his chair and frantically scrolling through the pages, on Christmas eve my partner feverishly read me the entire list of film review site Rotten Tomatoes' best and worst and best movies of the last decade. I wasn't so interested really – many films I like wouldn't have had a chance of making the list!

Later I did find one list (and a great blog!) summing up the year which I found similarly gripping. Worth a look for all the design or geeks out there is corporate and brand identity critique blog Brand New which offers a list of The 10 Best and Worst Identities of 2009. They've listed bing (Microsoft's search engine) as the biggest loser. I loved design heavyweight Erik Spiekermann's comment that "If that is true [that the wordmark is hand drawn], it is sad. Couldn’t you hire someone who can actually design type? It wouldn’t take more than an hour to do. It would still be a boring logo, but at least it wouldn’t look like a free font drawn by a 15-year old in Corel Draw, in 1987. It was made from scratch and it still looks like scratch". Ouch.

There is some gold there too. The best list features some stunning work for the New York City library. Also a done-already concept utilising more multiple logotypes which was beautifully executed for Melbourne City. I wouldn't mind having one of those parking tickets!

That's Intriguing _ Spanish style beyond ceramics

It's pretty clear that Urban Nanna loves a good pattern. I also enjoy discovering the influences on the design. Yesterday my commercial work required a search of Spanish tiles (a client wanted a Spanish theme for their email design). I then wondered what I could find from those who'd reinterpreted the patterns and extended their applications beyond ceramics.

The major influences on Spanish pottery came from the European neighbours who had invaded or taken up residence over time. Greece, Phoenicia, Rome and various Gothic tribes culminating with the Visigoths and lastingly the Moors all contributed to the production and decoration of enduringly beautiful results.

Shonah Jewellery Design – By Shonah Tomkins. Check out this beautiful interpretation of Spanish tile patterns (left) as well as a stunning range of other jewellery. The Australian's retails extensively across the ditch but only in Kerikeri in New Zealand. Her work suits the Kiwi taste and I wasn't surprised to find that Frankie magazine had covered her work. Check out order a custom made piece as well – perfect for Christmas gifts!

From Spain to France ... Happily my search for Flamenco flavoured cool sent me to some of my French favourite designers. Slightly scary styling of the models but worth a look is the Dior Couture Collection Fall 2003 from John Galliano. It tours his interpretations of multiple dance costume conventions. He seems to shine when offered the budget and freedom of couture theatrical pieces rather than the restrictions of ready to wear.

Love these boots! Flamenco inspired from the Christian Lacroix Fall 07 Collection are at his decorative peak. To finish, as I'm a huge Oscar fan, I found this incredible elegant gown with Flamenco trim from the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2008 Collection. As usual, he matches femininity and decoration like none other. He's not, in my opinion, one of the cutting edge designers any longer but I'm a devotee nonetheless. Why change perfection?

Film Fashion Love _ An Education

Along the long trail of films I've watched there shines a few glittering jems when it comes to costumes. Not the kind of costumes that win awards. It's easy to pick out the timelessly stylish Holly Golightly or name great costume design films like Baz Luhrman's "Moulin Rouge". I quickly recall Nicole Kidman in that top hat and diamond studded corset swinging above a sweaty throng of men singing "Diamonds are a girl's best friend". Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" had me in a trance-like state, glued to the excess and femininity of baroque glamour. I'd even say the sequence with quick edit frames parading the endless decadence of decorated cupcakes, shoes, fans and feathers is an all time favourite.

So of course, I love those films. But there's a different kind of jem I love just as much. A more understated match of styling and character like Juliette Lewis rocking every outfit in 1993's "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?". She injects an out of place, carefree chic relief to the Texan suburban setting. Molly Ringwald in "Pretty in Pink" is another favourite – innocence and angst in perfect 1980s clashing alignment.

"An Education" by Lone Scherfig is this kind of film jem too. AceShowbiz describes it as 'The story of a teenage girl's coming-of-age set in 1961 London, a city caught between the drab, post-war 1950s and the glamorous, more liberated decade to come'. I was captured by every outfit worn by actresses Carey Mulligan and Rosamund Pike.

The movie was made more enjoyable for me because of their characters' unbelievable style – wearing pieces I wish I could see and touch and existing in an era of coiffured class I wish we could be part of. These pictures don't do it justice by half – go and see it for yourself. The set is equally stylish. We couldn't stop feverishly whispering about the objects and furniture in each scene.

There will be more to come in this Urban Nanna cultural watching vein – what are your favourite fashion films? I'll happily watch and review any recommendations.

That's Intriguing : Bil Donovan - Inhouse Illustrator for Dior

Every so often I my trawl across the internet leads me to an artist, creative or thinker whose work is so extraordinary that I want to show them off to all who'll listen. Bil Donovan is one such artist. This illustrator has worked with the heavy hitting fashion players all across the world and received an avalanche of awards for his work – it's not hard to see why. Take a look for yourself at his website.

Reportedly he is working on a fashion and lifestyle illustration textbook due out this year and yes, currently he is the inhouse Dior illustrator at large. I can't think of many fashion illustrations as beautiful as these save for Paul Poiret's deco studies and Warhol's work for Vogue. Such elegant visual feminine treats deserve to be shared - if you haven't had a taste already.

Urban Nanna Interview 9 _ James Bowman

Urban Nanna: What do you do for a crust? What positive impact has your profession made on you?

I’m an advertising art director – simply put, usually I team up with a writing partner to come up with ideas together, then he/she is generally responsible for the words and I’m generally responsible for the pictures. So I get to direct / collaborate with film makers, animators, photographers, illustrators, typographers, interactive guys, designers, musicians, actors, voice talent, models, wardrobe, stylists, model makers etc and all the production people too. I used to be a bit of a creative loner, so I think the most positive impact advertising has had on me is turning me into a creative collaborator. They make me better, and it’s more fun.

Urban Nanna: Any other creative mediums you are involved in for leisure?

I have three long term creative projects, working in close collaboration with my wonderful Mrs: our kids. I used to be a graphic designer, so I occasionally delve into identities for family and friends. I illustrated for a couple of years; that’s on hold for now, but it’s part of my post-advertising plan. Those aren’t really leisure are they...

I build hard-out sandcastles. And I do a lot of creative stuff for our church St Paul’s which I do in my ‘leisure’ time. That ranges from design and promotions to exhibitions/events to film/stage stuff. Again the best/most enjoyable of that work has been when I’ve collaborated with a wide-range of professional arts and media types and kids.

Speaking of kids, my wife and I really get a kick out of creating birthday parties for our little darlings based around themes of their choosing. We love to encourage their passions. So whatever they’re into at the time, we turn it in to a creative, fun day for them to share with their mates.

Urban Nanna: What do you enjoy most about the work you are involved with making?

I’m all about getting a reaction from others. Laughter, tears, joy, confusion; I’ll take 'em all. The bigger the better. I’m equally at home doing silly, beautiful, shocking, minimal, complex, lo-tech, weird, honest and tricky. I hate doing dull. Sometimes they make me compromise (hey I’ve got a family to support) but I’ll never admit it was mine. And I never create just for me.

Urban Nanna: Which sites online do you visit regularly as a source of creative inspiration / information?

Best Ads on TV – Most of the best ads in the world, updated weekly. I love great ads. Great ads get great reactions.

Urban Nanna: Which artists and creative people do you admire?

There are SO MANY artists and creative people I admire for SO MANY reasons. Here’s a few.

Jesus for creating the most profound, world-changing stories ever in the form of parables (succinct made-up stories about the length of a TV commercial).

Stephen Spielberg for making movies that have moved and entertained so many people in so many different ways.

George Lucas for creating Star Wars which is still my fav movie ever. It’s enduring popularity is amazing.

Pixar for creating the most movies I’ve bought on DVD.

Erwin Olaf for creating incredibly disturbing but beautiful photography.

Ray Caesar for pretty much doing the same thing with his illustration.

Love it: "The word 'portfolio' suggests a selection of work that is easy-to-carry, simple to digest, smoothly streamlined. Our website is far from that. It is a monster of an archive, in which we neurotically try to describe everything, not only our greatest hits, but also our biggest failures."]

Vincent Van Gogh for starting off with a pretty average painting ability, and playing and pushing until he became my favourite painter ever.

Sandro Botticelli for being so boring in books and slides but taking my breath away when I saw his actual work.

Working at Jericho has shown me that if you set your mind to something you can do it. All I wanted to do when I was young was read books and sit in the sun, I never thought I would be able to turn a computer on, and I can now.

I love collecting and framing cool record covers and also collecting old Penguin books. I really want to start quilting as well.

I like working with a range of different topics that appeal to a variety of people. It always entertains me reading the things that people think are important or interesting. I like working with people who are inspired by things that others may find boring. Everyone has different passions – it's really intriguing.

How far would you go to get some of your fav stuff? I haven’t crossed the law for fashion to date myself – yet. I might think about it to get my hands on a couture Dior Spring 07 collection dress by Galliano. About the most extreme thing I’ve done for fashion is get a brazilian.

In the name of adornment a few centuries ago however, it was worth the risk of punishment to stash a bunch of coveted lace in the coffins of expats in order to smuggle it out of Italy. I can only imagine what crosses through the mind of someone planning to ship out the body of their dear uncle Alfred loaded with a few kilos of the precious white stuff.

The origins of lace trace mostly back to the Adriatic region in the 1400s. A surge in popularity during the Renaissance created a battleground for supremacy between Italy and France who both vied to profit from the intricate textiles. Venetian lace was akin to gold and taxed accordingly which created a black market. Even pet dogs were party to smuggling tactics – crossing borders adorned with lace hidden under fur wraps. Expatriate coffins were another means of transporting the expensive cargo.

Lace design and methods of crafting it have adapted according to fashion and technology. As new, finer processes were picked up by the French, the dominance of Venetian lace moved into decline. The heavier, stiffer Venetian lace such as Gros Point was replaced with Point de France. A new fluidity and change in dress to a softer, draped style enabled almost immediate success, notably in the Court of Louis XIV.

The practice of lace making continued to spread amongst professionals and amateurs throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Machine made lace and the associated savings has meant that lace is no longer solely a luxury for the elite. This development as well as fluctuations in the use of lace in fashion meant the knowledge and skills required for the handmade craft have often laid dormant.

Currently the lace aesthetic has been adopted by a number of artists – I’ve profiled three who caught my eye. There are endless interpretations from homewares to sellotape where you can now have your very own piece of what was once to die for.

Originally from Virginia, Carlee studied and worked in Los Angeles before pursuing a career as a jeweler. She now works in conjunction with fellow American designer Sonya Ooten. Her work has featured on celebrities and in fashion periodicals however the pieces are only available online unless you are in the US or the UK – have a look at her website or brownsfashion

‘METALACE' Collection – The Art of Lace on Metal

I’m in love – vividly fusing the heritage and delicacy of lace with modern materials has resulted in this impressive collection. Inspired by lace from the 16^th – 19^th centuries, I'm stunned by the beauty of the objects, presentation and craftsmanship. The Metalace site says “Our designs reflect the desire to preserve the special and personal touch that was an integral part of all handcrafted objects historically.” The Israeli born artist’s work is sold throughout the world.

Aurelie Bidermann

Easily the most accomplished of the three artists, Bidermann's work has featured in numerous European Vogue fashion spreads and the recent Style.com accessory report yet it's not easy to find out about the lady herself. Her recent collection illustrates a delightful, bold take of femininity.

Urban Nanna: What do you do for a crust? What positive impact has your profession made on you?

I'm an event stylist, so basically I design and bring to life all the creative details for corporate functions and weddings.

The impact the job has had on my life is huge. I'm regularly blown away by the amount of people I come across who feel that they have no creativity. I truly believe that everyone is born with the ability to think creatively and life tends to crush this out of you as time goes on, so I'm grateful I've managed to hold onto a bit of mine!

I've also learnt that you can produce work that is both commercially viable and has artistic integrity. Most of all, I've learnt from my work that design for design's sake is often hollow and without impact on people's lives. Coming from a decorator, that may sound strange but ultimately it's the meaningful details that create the experience people remember.

Urban Nanna: Any other creative mediums you are involved in for leisure?

Once a year, I paint :)

Urban Nanna: What do you enjoy most about the work you are involved with making?

I think I'm pretty lucky as the work is so varied in my job. One day we're creating a floral chandelier, the next we're designing print material and I really enjoy that variety.

I love making people's dreams a reality, particularly with weddings. Some girls dream of their wedding their whole life and I get to make it real for them. I really enjoy working with couples who are interested in creating an amazing but personal experience for their guests.

Preston Bailey - floral artist / event stylist extraordinaire!!!

Julia Rothman - I think her illustrations are so beautiful and playful.

Simone Martini - ok so he's long dead but the elegance of his painting inspires me. More than that I am amazed by the way some of his works (particularly his Annunciation c.1333). They're so expressive while still adhering to a very rigid type.

Chutney, relish and jam

I like the challenge of using what’s in season / plentiful / homegrown – “waste not, want not”. At my flat I have a drawer of different preserves, and lots of empty jars that want filling. At my folks place there are always jars of mum’s homemade marmalade and tomato relish and sauce in neat rows on the preserve shelves. My Gran, at 85, still makes her own orange marmalade – a true Nanna! So I guess you could say it runs in the family.

Cake decorating

I did a night class in 2007 with a friend and since then I have developed these skills by making a number of birthday, wedding and special occasion cakes for family, friends and friends-of-friends. I have a “Birthday Book” photo album of my first 10 birthday cakes that Mum made – so she was my very first inspiration for this Nanna interest!

Baking of any description

I love using leftover ingredients for delicious creations in the kitchen. From a young age I have been exposed to cooking and baking – memories of baking muesli, muffins, and bread at home with Dad as a child have stayed with me. Mum, of course, still dominates in the kitchen and like me is not afraid to try new recipes, which we frequently share.

Sewing

I got my own machine for my 21st birthday and have since acquired an overlocker which is extremely useful. The next thing I’d like to learn is pattern making.

Cross Stitch

Although I haven’t done so much recently, I used to be big into cross stitch as a teenager and have a few framed works. The thing I most like about it is seeing the image emerge and the accuracy required when following the pattern and getting the stitches just right.

Quilting

At the moment I am making a quilt for my sister's sprout (due next month). I'm using a pattern by Denyse Schmidt, whom I really love.

[An interesting aspect to Schmidt's beautiful work is that some of the production is carried out by Amish ladies - she writes "Our couture quilts are hand quilted by Amish women in Minnesota. Amish women have been quilting by hand for over a century, and their work is regarded as some of the finest in the world ... In fact, each quilt can also serve as a beautiful reminder for us to slow down. In our high-pressured, fast-paced, tech-saturated world, the essence of Amish life (with emphasis on tranquility and simplicity), is something we can all aspire to." Worth a thought...]

Apart from being an Urban Nanna, I like to [adopt] other people's Nannas (or Mums depending on how Nanna-ish they are).

Portraiture, Watercolour and Tea
From an art point of view, love my weekly ladies' portriature evening with Muriel - we draw each other, and chat and drink tea while we go.

I've been really wanting to get into watercolour as well and there are a bunch of us who are keen including my second Mum! For watercolour I think Rita Angus is amazing, she has such a crisp vivid style and amazing colour and detail.

I also like artists from the 1940s, in particular the 'Rutland Group' from Elam, Auckland. They had brilliant drawing skills (with a strong focus on life-drawing) and great compostion and colour.

[The Rutland group was a painting and exhibiting body which was established in the 1930s. It consisted of a group of students and graduates from the University of Auckland Fine Arts School - Elam - such as artists Peter Brown, Ruth Coyle, Ron Stenberg, Sina Willcott, Blanche Wormald]

Jackson Pollock - I admire that he was able to break free!

Colin McCahon – He demonstrated how to remain true to your own voice when no one else is listening (they woke up years later).

Allen Maddox – anger is ok when confined to a blank canvas.

Philippe Starck - clean lines.

BMW designers – very smart.

Frank Lloyd Wright - ahead of his time. Falling Water is still one of the world's most amazing examples of brilliant architecture.

Urban Nanna: What do you do for a crust? What positive impact has your profession made on you?

My partner Si and I run a photography/creative business together called Bayly & Moore. We do doco-style photography and we both share the same passion for capturing real life images. We want to travel together to remote places and find weird and wonderful characters to photograph and tell their stories.

Urban Nanna: Any other creative mediums you are involved in for leisure?

Getting the right amount of avocado spread on my vogels. Does that count? I use to paint, now i'm more of a blank canvas collector. Si plays for a few different musicians and is also a sessions guitarist with Pop Science based at York Street Recording Studios.

Urban Nanna: What do you enjoy most about the work you are involved with making?

I get to do what I love and I get to do photography with the man that I love. There's no Monday-blues when you work for yourself. You have all the control over what you do, how you wanna do it and where you want to go. It's extremely rewarding building your own empire as opposed to slaving over someone elses dream. I love where photography takes you (to the UK and Rome next month!) and who you get to meet - from actors, musicians and university professor geniuses to the cool old man at the junk shop and the homeless guy at the old downtown train station.

I love how a single frame can tell so much. You notice all the little details in these audio slideshows that sometimes moving images can't.

Chase Jarvis
Chase is a great commercial photographer who likes to share his knowledge around. These days people get so competitive and isolate themselves in fear of their competition so I really admire his generosity and work philosophy.

Flickr
It's incredible how many talented amateur photographers are out there! This is a great source for ideas, there must be a bizillion trillion photos on here from millions of people around the world. You find photostreams like Eleanor Hardwick,a 16 year old girl from South England whose work is better than plenty of experienced fashion photographers.

Urban Nanna: Which artists and creative people do you admire?

Steve McCurry - the National Geographic photographer who took the famous image of that Afghanistan girl and her piercing eyes. All his work is just incredible. I love all NG photographers actually, this was a dream of mine to be a NG photographer (along with 6 million others!)

Danielle Kristmanson - my old boss at Origin Design + Communications in Whistler, Canada. She has a great work ethic and as well as being super talented as an art director and business woman she looked after her staff. What other boss do you know that would let you take the morning off work on powder days, pay for your season pass and also come snowboarding with you!

John Moore, Getty Images photographer
John travels along with with the U.S. miltary documenting in war zones like the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has some photographers journals showing super powerful images of what it's like to be there along with audio. I admire his authentic photo style and crave those real life cutting moments in my own work.

Cleanliness... Next to godliness

I do honestly enjoy cleaning but I'm not sure if I'd class it as an 'interest'. It's therapeutic so I tend to get into it when I'm stressed or I want to restore order. A little easy to get too involved and spend a lot of time on it! I have found myself compelled to clean other people's spaces too... My mother is a hoarder so I have to try not to think about that when I'm at their place. Recently I discovered the cleaning properties of white vinegar plus cotton wool from some sort of home-cleaning reality show and applied the new knowledge wherever I could.

Apartment Gardening

I haven't got very involved with gardening yet but that's mainly because I live in an apartment. I intend to though! I have some creepers, a mandarin tree, an orchid, coriander and a succulent. I've enjoyed learning about what environments and feeding habits each of the plants like over time. They're my little plant family! I want to have a herb garden and a water garden once I have a little more land.

Cooking

Over the last two months I've started to cook a lot more. After some time not bothering much with it I realised I'd got into a rut - cooking the same things all the time and spending heaps on eating out. I love coriander so Thai dishes always appeal to me. I love the smells of cooking and watching what happens when different ingredients combine.

I baked some chocolate caramel slice recently and loved watching caramel form from the butter and golden syrup - beautiful frothy amber liquid. It was messy though!!

Definitely the best part about cooking new recipes is that I feel I've achieved something. I also love watching people enjoy my creations.

I love detailed, elegant, feminine patterns from a range of eras and cultures. Art deco, oriental and lace are some favourites. Boudoir patterns went through a bit of a resurgence recently but I don't think my love for detailed beautiful patterns will change much. I find the patterns associated with cultures really interesting.
